THE WOMEN + Puce Moment
27 April at 8.20
The Women
Scripted by Anita Loos (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) and Jane Murfin, The Women is a 1930s classic that features an extraordinary all female cast. With a directorial emphasis on razor sharp dialogue, the knowledge of Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer’s off screen feuding provides an added interest to the ferocious insults and acid put downs. Much of the film’s visual appeal can be attributed to costume designer Gilbert Adrian who designed 237 gowns for the film’s cast. Scandal mongering and gold digging a plenty the result is a witty, fast paced, and brilliantly acted farce.
Puce Moment (6 mins)
Puce Moment represents a fragment of a film script never completed about the glamour, decadence, and decline of Hollywood entitled “Puce Women.” It demonstrates Anger’s preoccupation with the myths and decline of Hollywood as it follows the fetishistic dressing ritual of a glamorous woman as she prepares to walk her high bred hounds.
“Kenneth Anger is a unique film-maker, an artist of exceptional imagination” Martin Scorsese

Blow-Up
Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blow-Up tells the ambiguous tale of a London based nihilistic, high-fashion photographer played by David Hemmings. Stifled and suffering ennui, he secretly shoots a seemingly harmless lover’s tryst but which on closer photographic inspection transpires could be a murder. Questioning the maxim that the camera never lies, Blow-Up is a visually rich exploration of the dichotomy between appearance and reality.
FAME, FASHION AND PHOTOGRAPHY: THE REAL BLOW-UP

Fame, Fashion and Photography: The Real Blow-Up (2002) (TV)
Through the first hand accounts of models and photographers, The Real Blow-Up is the story of the photographers who cemented the image of swinging London and who, through their pictures, irreversibly altered the face of fashion and pop. This acclaimed BBC2 documentary examines the breaking down of barriers, the ‘60s cultural melting pot and the explosion of opportunity and creativity for those fortunate enough to be part of the scene.
DARLING
29 April 8.30
Darling
Nominated for five Academy Awards and winning three including best actress, (Julie Christie) costume design and writing, Darling hints at Hollywood’s high gloss women’s pictures while still echoing the social realism of 1960’s British cinema. The film tells the story of Diana Scott (Christie) a beautiful but amoral model who climbs in and out of bed on her way to the top of London’s fashion scene.
